Knowing what happens in the future, this should have been Araragi’s first warning not to mess with Nadeko. As Kanbaru points out, snakes are cowards they’ll strike and then flee, but they’re not the type to stand and fight unless the enemy is already “dead”. This means even when her own life is ebbing from her she’ll hide, ironically not unlike a snake. She was baring the pain of two snakes and not showing any signs of it. As they start the ritual to remove the snake Araragi soon realizes there’s another one, most likely sent to her by the boy that Sengoku turned down. Nadeko should have been in agony from one stake crushing the life out of her, but she didn’t have just one. This is when we start to learn something about Nadeko, something scary. Instead she made her own curse worse and by the time she meets Araragi, her life is at stake. This may have been in part due to the evil apparitions surrounding the shrine. In an attempt to rid herself of the snake Nadeko found a way to undo the curse, but messed it up. This curse inflicted Nadeko with an invisible snake wrapped around her body slowly constricting itself. Unfortunately for her this angered another girl who had a crush on the boy, enough to cast a curse on Nadeko. Nadeko was confessed to by a boy at school, but she turned him down claiming to have a crush on someone else. It’s hard to talk about her without spoiling future archs concerning her as most of what’s revealed doesn’t really seem to have an affect on this arch.
I am curious how long that will hold out, though from what I remember from future archs I do think we’ll hear about it again. Thankfully Araragi puts a talisman down that somehow prevents the war from occurring at least for now. We’re not told the exact affect this battle would have but judging from what we do know it wouldn’t have been good. Apparently evil apparitions had started to congregate around this abandoned shrine and were about to start a war. This arch starts out with Kanbaru and Araragi running a favor for Oshino and it is this favor that reveals the consequences of Shinobu’s and Araragi’s existences. She’s such a favorite character in fact that she inspired a character in my own story (that’ll probably never see the light of day). It’s finally time to introduce one of my other favorite characters in the series Nadeko Sengoku. Continuing on with my review of Bakemonogatari.
